C.B.B. Lifeline Biotech Ltd. (Lifeline) is the first umbilical cord stem cells bank that was incorporated in Europe (UK) back in 1994 and has been operating as a regional bank with headquarters in Cyprus, since 2002. The processing, testing and cryopreservation of cellular therapy products take place in Lifeline’s purpose built premises in Nicosia.

Lifeline is committed to an ongoing evaluation and adoption of more efficient systems in order to continuously provide the highest possible quality and safety by using the latest technologies available in the testing and the cryopreservation of the units.

How do we collaborate?
We were privileged to provide strategic guidance to C.B.B.Lifeline Biotech Ltd, with a central focus on capitalizing on High-Performance Computing (HPC) for advanced biological data analysis.

EMBIO Diagnostics is a rapidly growing biotech company which designs and develops innovative, portable, biosensor-based digital devices for rapid diagnostics.

How do we collaborate?
The NCC supported the Research and Development team of EMBIO in analysing time series data from Air Quality sensors. Specifically, through a detailed exploratory analysis, advanced visualisations and statistical methods, the team was able to better understand the functionalities, strengths, and weaknesses of their sensors.

Following on from this, NCC data scientists and the industry team collaborated to develop an air-quality score, which could later be predicted using Machine Learning and time series analysis.

Academia Collaborations

CY-Biobank is a state-of-the-art biobank facility focusing on collecting, processing, and storing biological samples and associated data, supporting biomedical research and personalized medicine. CY-Biobank serves as a valuable resource for academic, industrial, and governmental institutions, fostering collaborations and promoting the advancement of scientific knowledge and innovation in genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics.

How do we collaborate?
In collaboration with CY-Biobank, computational scientists at CaSToRC are developing cutting-edge algorithms and data analysis techniques for processing and interpreting large-scale biological datasets. This includes the application of High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics research, as well as developing advanced bioinformatics tools to facilitate the integration and mining of complex, multi-omic data. Our joint efforts aim to accelerate the discovery of novel biomarkers, therapeutic targets, and personalized treatment strategies, ultimately improving patient outcomes and advancing precision medicine.

The Department of Psychology at the University of Cyprus is committed to excellence in both teaching and research. This newly established department offers an undergraduate degree in Psychology, as well as three Master’s degree programs.

How do we collaborate?

In collaboration with the Department of Psychology, computational scientists at CaSToRC are analysing a large dataset consisting of more than 100 individuals to classify whether or not they exhibit the personality trait known as alexithymia. By conducting a detailed exploratory analysis utilising advanced visualisations and statistical methods, the team was able to identify biomarkers that could prove useful in accurately identifying alexithymia in future research studies.

As a result of this collaboration, the computational scientists published a conference paper titled “A Wavelet-based Approach for Multimodal Prediction of Alexithymia from Physiological Signals”. This paper highlights the methodology employed to predict alexithymia, and demonstrates the potential for future research to utilize this approach.

Public Sector Collaborations

The Agricultural Research Institute (ARI) is a Department under the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, of the Republic of Cyprus.

The vision of the Agricultural Research Institute is to be a model center of knowledge and innovation, and lead Cyprus to a better future by strengthening rural development, improving the quality of life, and ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources.

The Agricultural Research Institute conducts research aiming to create and transfer knowledge for the development of the primary sector and to solve problems at the farmer’s level. The research results are transferred to stakeholders through modern educational programs and dissemination tools. Its research activity strengthens rural development and contributes to the adoption of a sustainable rural policy and innovation offer.

How do we collaborate?
The NCC is working together with ARI, supporting them to run their computational projects on the national HPC system hosted at The Cyprus Institute, and also consulting with them on how they can employ various techniques for the analysis of their data.

The German Oncology Center (GOC) is a medical center of excellence offering state of the art oncological services. It was founded in 2016 and has since become the leader in cancer diagnosis, treatment and research in the island, as it offers, among others, an extensive range of advanced medical imaging equipment, nuclear and radiotherapy treatments.

How do we collaborate?
The NCC supports the GOC by providing the HPC facilities and expertise in developing AI and Machine Learning models in medical imaging and the development of tools to assist decision making of medical professionals in cancer treatment. Additionally, NCC scientists and members of the GOC’s Research and Innovation department collaborate closely in grant writing.

Hyperion has more than 25 years of experience bringing ongoing value to global, regional and local operating companies in the Process Industries. They are leading providers of consulting and engineering advisory services, specialized technology and implementation of advanced process systems solutions in the hydrocarbons, chemicals and power generation industries.

How do we collaborate?
Computational scientists at the NCC are creating AI algorithms with Hyperion that use vast amounts of production plant measurement data to develop models to predict critical quality parameters of the processed material based on real-time conditions. The models will be embedded in Hyperion’s solutions and serve as virtual instrumentation that will infer measurements that can be used to help isolate low quality material more efficiently and dramatically reduce the waste and thus the costs for the company.

AXIA CHARTERED SURVEYORS™ · Real-Geosolutions Ltd · Department of Lands and Surveys

AXIA CHARTERED SURVEYORS™ is a company registered under the name T.Dimopoulos & Associates Property Valuers L.L.C. The company operates throughout Cyprus and has offices in both Nicosia and Larnaca. ΑΧΙΑ specialises in property valuations and provides a wide range of other professional property related services such as: development appraisals, property management, planning & development advice, market research and investment consultancy.

Real-Geosolutions Ltd is the first real estate software firm in Cyprus who designed and developed a unique holistic Real Estate software with full Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Integration. The software covers Asset and Client Database Management, Land Cadastral Integration, GIS Integration, Valuation Analysis (complete analysis of comparable transactions with incorporation of Adjustment Matrix), Analysis Report Export and Statistical Analysis Export.

How do we collaborate?
In a collaboration involving AXIA Chartered Surveyors, Real-Geosolutions, the Department of Lands and Surveys and the NCC, we develop large-scale Machine Learning algorithms for automated, mass real-estate appraisals in Cyprus. This will help bring more transparency to the market as valuations will be readily available to the general public, professional valuers and financial and banking institutions for control purposes.

RetailZoom is a data analytics company operating in Europe, the Middle East, Iran and Africa, aiming at providing analytical insights and custom software solutions to medium and large businesses and organizations, with services revolving around statistical analysis and data automation.

How do we collaborate?
RetailZoom has supported the NCC in creating a Hackathon challenge at the 1st Cyprus HPC Industry Week. We expanded the collaboration to support RetailZoom to gain deeper insights of the market using HPC and AI by building recommender systems for retail items.

The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) was established in 1963 with the primary objective to ensure price stability.

How do we collaborate?
NCC scientists are supporting the CBC in a number of projects that involve the usage of HPC and Artificial Intelligence for analysis of Big Data and help CBC get deeper insights from the available data. The NCC also creates links with the relevant research groups within the institute, to facilitate the work being done by CBC in economic forecasting, using climate data.

Offshore Monitoring is an SME specialising in technical and financial management and coordination of research and development activities with the mission to ‘make a market’ and transfer non-maritime emerging technologies to the maritime sector. They facilitate the development of monitoring systems and sensor solutions for maritime sector using innovative approaches and unconventional techniques.

How do we collaborate?
In collaboration with O.M. Offshore Monitoring, the computational scientists at the NCC are developing a software for the optimization of navigation in the maritime sector. The computational scientists at the NCC have exposed aspects of the software where parallelism can be incorporated and are working in the GPU implementation of the most time-consuming components.

Novo Technologies represents and promotes international video security system manufacturers in Greece, Cyprus and the Balkans.

How do we collaborate?
With Novo technologies, the NCC has built pilot deep learning models for real-time human detection in videos for security applications.

Geofem has expertise and experience ideally balanced in the fields of civil engineering, satellite remote sensing and GIS to deliver informed and accessible information to infrastructure, mining, energy and insurance stakeholders worldwide.

How do we collaborate?
The NCC supports Geofem by providing consulting in the topics of big data analysis and grant writing.

Irerobot has its main focus in auditory communication enhancement through touch, and is set to revolutionize the tactile interface industry by enabling natural immertion in the acoustic world through the sense of touch. Further, the company works on projects relevant to our scope, such as wearable robotics, human-robot interaction technology and other.

How do we collaborate?
The NCC supports Irerobot by providing consulting in the potentials in the usage of High Performance Computing.

Mantis NLP is an AI consultancy specialising in Natural Language Processing. They provide advice for the data needs of companies, integrate or embed into AI projects to provide practical support and develop, build and deploy the most relevant machine learning and deep learning techniques. Mantis NLP is committed to reduce ethical risks in AI applications and be active members of the open source community.

How do we collaborate?
The NCC supports Mantis NLP to train neural networks for Natural Language Processing in the CyI’s HPC facility. One of the projects aims to build a Cypriot language model, using transformers / BERT.

Electi Consulting is a leading consultancy that provides technical and business consulting. Electi focuses on the areas of Digital Τransformation and Strategy, Data Science/Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain Technologies and Information Security/Cryptography.

How do we collaborate?
The NCC supports Electi in training neural networks for Computer Vision in the CyI’s HPC facility.

State Health Services Organisation is the largest Healthcare provider in Cyprus, with 9 hospitals and 38 health centers in all cities and provinces.

SHSO hospitals and health centers are available to citizens of all ages, 24 hours a day, with SHSO offering comprehensive health services that cover the full range of health needs of the population throughout Cyprus.
