Date: 10-14 October 2024
Overview:
The "Hack for a cause" hackathon is organized by the Cyprus Institute (CyI) in collaboration with the Cyprus Anticancer Society and focuses on leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve the drug prescription process for hospitalized cancer patients, particularly addressing the complexities of polypharmacy. The aim is to develop an AI tool that utilizes patients' treatment charts—documents indicating prescribed medications, dosages, frequencies, routes, allergies, and comorbidities—along with publicly available medicine descriptions to issue high-level alerts to doctors during the prescription process. These alerts will be triggered if the tool identifies drug interactions, contraindications with the patient’s medical record, or potential overdoses.
Registration:
Registration for this event is open until Thursday, October 3rd 12:00pm, 2024. Registration form here.
Important details:
The event will be conducted in a hybrid format, allowing for both online and onsite participation from national and international attendees. Cypriot participants are highly encouraged to join in person, with physical presence expected only on the first day (Thursday, 10 October 2024 – full day) and the last day (Monday, 14 October 2024 – half day).
* The Zoom link for online attendees will be communicated via email at a later date.
On-site participation will be held at Fresnel Building - John Ioannides Auditorium, The Cyprus Institute, 20 Konstantinou Kavafi Street, Aglantzia 2121.
Prize:
All participants will receive a "Certificate of Attendance" from the Cyprus Institute, acknowledging their participation and achievement in the hackathon. The winning team will be invited to deliver a guest presentation at the Cyprus Institute, where they will showcase their prototype. Additionally, the winning team will be offered the opportunity to apply for summer internships at the Institute, receive personalized mentorship from CyI researchers, and gain access to the Institute's High-Performance Computing resources.
Target Audience:
Expected Deliverables
Prior to the start of the Hackathon, an email will be sent to participants to create an account on the HPC machine of the CyI (Cyclone). On the first day of the Hackathon event, participants will be guided by experienced instructors on how to log in to the Cyclone supercomputer. Additionally, these instructors will provide support through documentation and a helpdesk throughout the Hackathon, except during the weekend, to assist participants with any problems.
